Volvo Changes the Names of its Hybrid and Electric Models for Greater Clarity

Volvo Cars is taking measures to ensure potential buyers are not confused by its diverse product offering, unveiling a strategic reimagining of the model names for its fully electric vehicles (EVs). In a deliberate effort to dispel confusion and enhance consumer comprehension, the existing  XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge will be reborn as the 2025 EX40 and EC40, seamlessly integrating into the family alongside the new EX30 and EX90.

This forward-looking transition aligns seamlessly with Volvo's ambitious journey toward becoming a fully electric car manufacturer by 2030. 2023 marked a watershed moment with fully electric cars comprising an impressive 16 percent of global sales volumes—a striking 70 percent surge from the preceding year. This performance is only expected to get better as two important new models will begin deliveries this year: the sub-compact EX30 and the three-row EX90.

While no electric cars from Volvo will use the “Recharge” nameplate in 2025, neither will plug-in hybrid models. Indeed, PHEV versions will now only be distinguished from their mild-hybrid counterparts by the T6 and T8 powertrain badges. This means that the Recharge name, which made many believe that PHEV Volvo models were fully electrified, will no longer be in use.

Mild-hybrid B5 and B6 entry-level versions will remain unchanged, except for a more fuel-efficient and cleaner combustion cycle in the XC60 B5 and XC90 B5, another measure that shows’ Volvo’s commitment to achieving sustainability.

Other changes that will be made to Volvo models for the 2025 model year include the addition to the newly renamed EX40 and EC40 of a Performance Pack that can boost the output of the Twin Engine dual motor powertrain up to 436 horsepower. By also including a different throttle mapping and a dedicated “Performance” drive mode, this pack makes the two electric crossovers even more dynamic than before. Owners of compatible 2024 models will also be offered this upgrade as an over-the-air update since it is entirely based on software.

Due to its success on the XC60, the Black Edition will make its way to all of the 40-Series models, including the gasoline-powered XC40. This trim level replaces all exterior brightwork with gloss black accents, it is only available with black paint, and it offers a choice of black Microtech or textile upholstery.

In essence, Volvo's revamped naming strategy is not just a symbolic shift; it's a deliberate commitment to provide consumers with a clear roadmap of the evolving situation of fully electric and hybrid options. By simplifying nomenclature, Volvo is empowering customers to make informed choices and facilitating a seamless transition towards sophisticated and sustainable automotive experiences.
